Gault Energy & Stone’s Vision Comes From Family Values!

Gault Inc., Since 1863

Beyond their historical significance, family businesses, like Gault Energy & Stone, are also the engine of our economy and the foundation of communities across America.  In fact, according to the Small Business Administration, family businesses comprise 90 percent of all business enterprises in North America, and a whopping 62% of total U.S. employment. Greater Norwalk Chamber of Commerce president and CEO Edward J. Musante, Jr. says that building and sustaining a family business over five generations, as the Gault family has done, is truly remarkable, especially when you consider that only 12 percent of family businesses in the U.S. are still viable by the third generation.

“Any business, whether family-owned and –operated or not, can learn a tremendous amount from the Gault story,” says Musante. “Creating and sustaining a culture of providing excellent products and services, while taking an active role in the community is, indeed, the cornerstone for long term success.  With a track record that spans five generations and many business evolutions, the Gault family’s wisdom for how to succeed in a dynamic business environment is priceless.”

Gault Energy & Stone’s Year-Long “150 Years of Community” Celebrations!

Gault Inc., Since 1863
Westport | 203-227-5181
Bethel | 203-790-9023

Gault Energy & Stone’s year-long “150 Years of Community” celebration includes:

“Call for Memories” Campaign
On the occasion of Gault Energy & Stone’s 100th Anniversary in 1963, the company received scores of congratulatory telegrams, letters, cards and notes from individuals and companies who shared personal memories of their experience with the company. These keepsake memories have become a treasured part of the Gault Family Archive. Inspired by this outpouring of support, the company is putting a modern spin on this time-honored tradition with an online “Call for Memories” campaign. Beginning in March, Gault Energy & Stone customers and employees, trade partners, family friends, and residents, young and old, as well as non-profit organizations that have benefitted from the company’s—and the family’s— support, will be invited to share their memories via an online “Call for Memories” form. The company will be showcasing a wide selection of these memories on its 150th Anniversary website,  at the Westport Historical Society exhibit this summer, and will be including a sampling of them in a commemorative booklet due out this summer.

“Acts of Community” Campaign
Building on the company’s 150-year tradition of supporting the communities it serves, this year, Gault Energy & Stone will launch a number of new and meaningful “Acts of Community” initiatives. Partnering with other area businesses and non-profits, the “Acts of Community” campaign will honor and support individuals and groups that have become the backbones of our Fairfield County communities: families, teachers, first responders, and others.

Westport Historical Society Exhibit
At the centerpiece of the 150th Anniversary celebration will be a Westport Historical Society (WHS) exhibit showcasing the many artifacts and images that uniquely tell the story of the Gault family and the Town of Westport through the lens of its oldest business. Open from Memorial Day through Labor Day, the exhibit will feature a vast collection of artifacts and historical photos that provide a snapshot of what life was like for hardworking immigrant families, like the Gaults, from 1863 to the present.

Chamber of Commerce Family Business Series
It’s no secret that family businesses, like Gault Energy & Stone, are the engine of our economy and the foundation of communities across America. Since nurturing Fairfield County family businesses makes good economic sense, this fall, Gault Energy & Stone will work with Chambers of Commerce across Fairfield County to offer its family business insights, expertise and lessons learned to their members.

Online Essay Competition: “What’s Next: Energizing the Next 150 Years”
From the company’s early days as a coal supplier to its current energy solutions offerings, including fuel-neutral HVAC equipment, heating oil, biofuel, Propane and electricity, Gault Energy has helped power and warm Fairfield County homes and businesses for generations. This fall, the company will ask Fairfield County teens to share their visions of energy solutions for the future in an online “What’s Next?” essay competition. Entrants will be encouraged to use their imaginations, research possibilities and offer energy solutions that are both realistic and fantastical.

The Gault Family Barn Officially Becomes A Historical Site!

Westport | 203-227-5181
Bethel | 203-790-9023

Sam Gault, current Gault Energy & Stone President who is the fifth generation to head the company that bears his name, paid homage to Robert Gault, his great-great-grandfather and company’s original founder, says the company’s anniversary celebration will highlight Robert’s immense gratitude for the opportunities available to him in his adopted country, and the tradition of giving back that Robert, and his descendants ever since, have bestowed on the community over the years through a variety of philanthropic, civic, arts and sports initiatives that promoted the progress and betterment of the town and the region.

“Our 150th anniversary is much more than a company milestone,” says Gault, president of Gault Energy & Stone. “It’s a celebration of family and community, and an opportunity to reflect on our history, as a family and as a company, as an integral part of our community.” Gault adds that today’s announcement that his family’s barn will be added to the State Register of Historic Places is a symbolic reminder of his family’s humble beginnings. “For five generations, my family has preserved and maintained the barn while also using it to support our various businesses. We’re truly honored that historians and curators from the Connecticut Trust for Historic Preservation and the Westport Historical Society agree that this family treasure is worthy of recognition.”

The history of the Gault family and the evolution of the company are now available at the company’s 150th Anniversary website www.gault150.com. The site provides a unique window into the history of Fairfield County.  In fact, the family's extensive Archive, documents in extraordinary detail the life, work and service of five generations of the Gault family to greater Westport from 1863 to the present.

According to Sue Gold, executive director of the Westport Historical Society, during this 150-year span, family members have been involved in the community in various roles at all stages of their lives: as young children, students and parents; as neighbors, farmers, business owners and land owners; as early adopters of new technology; as volunteers, and -- given the nature of their service enterprise -- as first responders to many types of emergencies.  “The Gault family's progress, as shown by their Family Archive, provides rare insight into Westport's progress since 1863,” says Gold, who adds that the Westport Historical Society plans to showcase this progression in a major Exhibit this summer.  "While Westport has a number of long-term families, the Gault Family Archive, spanning five generations of Gaults who lived and worked in the community, faithfully documenting their long family history with photos, documents and artifacts, is very special. We are very fortunate that the family is willing to share this collection with the community."

Gault Energy & Stone Unveils Year-Long 150th Anniversary Celebration Plans!

Gault Inc., Since 1863

Westport | 203-227-5181
Bethel | 203-790-9023

In honor of our 150th Anniversary, Gault Energy& Stone launched “150 Years of Community” last Thursday. This year-long series of community events and programs to commemorate the Gault family’s storied history as a fifth-generation family business, as well as its distinction as the oldest business in Westport, and the oldest family owned and operated energy company in Fairfield County.

The Gault family kicked off its 150th Anniversary celebration last Thursday at the one place that uniquely tells the Gault story from 1863 to present: the Gault Barn. Otherwise known as the Gault Brothers Farmstead, the Gault Barn is located on what is today called Compo Road South, in Westport. While the company has many historical artifacts in its rich archives, this Barn is considered one of the most compelling of the Gault family’s historic treasures. Prized by historians and curators from the Connecticut Trust for Historic Preservation and the Westport Historical Society as much for its architectural bones as for its historical narrative, the barn has been painstakingly preserved and offers a picturesque reminder of the community’s agrarian past and the family’s humble beginnings.

At Thursday’s launch on behalf of the Connecticut Trust for Historic Preservation, Barn Historian and Researcher, Charlotte Hitchcock announced that the Gault Barn, which is actually three barns built in stages from the 1890s to 1913, will be officially added to the State Register of Historic Places in the company’s 150th anniversary year. “The Gault barns are significant not only to the history of the family, but also to the Town of Westport and the State of Connecticut,” says Hitchcock.  “The structures’ timber frame construction reflects the building traditions of American farming, but the Gault family showed uncommon ingenuity by integrating a variety of materials from their lines of business, including brick and stone masonry, into the barns to create a truly unique barn complex.”  Hitchcock says that the barns have endured despite the changes in Westport’s built environment of the last century and a half that transformed it from an agricultural community into the more built-up landscape of today.  “Many of Westport’s and, indeed, Connecticut’s earliest barns have been lost to development.  Fortunately, the Gault family’s use of their barns evolved to support and take advantage of changes in the community over time, from dairy farming to lumber and feed grain, to coal and home heating oil delivery.  That these historical barns are still in productive use today is incredible, and rare.”
