Name: Sarah Cooperman
Back in October 2011, Sarah was chosen as Gault's Arctic Ambassador. Here's her firsthand account on the trip to the Canadian Arctic, sponsored by Gault Energy & Stone!
"I still remember the day I got the call. At first, I jumped giddily and did an embarrassing happy dance around my room, but then a wave of calm realization came over me. Gault had chosen me as their Arctic Ambassador. In this role, I would be sent on a week-long trip to the Canadian arctic tundra (completely sponsored by Gault) to study polar bears alongside scientists, educators, and teens from all over the planet who were just as passionate as I was. As I expected, that week in October of 2011 was the best week of my life. I not only experienced polar bears in their natural habitat and learned how to educate people about them, but I also formed irreplaceable bonds with an amazing group of teens. One moment in particular had a profound effect on me. I was standing outside in the cold while watching a polar bear in the wispy tundra foliage. It suddenly turned and looked back at me, and for what seemed like hours, I locked eyed with a polar bear. It was unlike anything I'd ever experienced. It was a true, wild, stunning animal staring straight into my own eyes as tundra wind whipped by my cheeks and rain drizzled onto my shaking hands. Of course, I walked into a meeting twenty minutes late as a result, but my life was changed in that one moment. From gazing into the eyes of that wondrous bear, I knew that we were not so different. It became clearer to me than ever before in that instant that I - that we - have a duty to protect this planet. It's such a special feeling to recognize that the world is so much bigger than you could have ever imagined, and Leadership Camp made me see that all of our actions to help the environment are puzzle pieces in preventing climate change. Leadership Camp has truly made me a better person. It allowed me to explore my passions and realize that I want to spend my life working to conserve the world's biodiversity. I cannot thank Gault enough for choosing me as their Arctic Ambassador. Gault's encouragement and commitment to communal and global issues has created an incredible support system for me. Like so many members of our community, I am indescribably grateful for what Gault has done for me. I know that I will always have Gault to thank for giving me a push to experience what I love and share it with others. Here's to an inspiring 150 years and many more to come!"
