In an article posted by The Wall Street Journal, experts were asked about what steps local, state, and federal governments should take to encourage energy conservation. One expert believes that when conservation is spoken about, it tends to be focused obsessively on the costs, while there are no regards for the forgone benefits of reducing consumption. Another expert believes that the governments should fundamentally change the tax structure because the energy choices people make are largely driven by cost.
Iván Martén believes that governments should take it sector by sector and should be setting clear tong-term targets for conservation. However in order to take these steps one needs to understand the challenges of conservation for each sector. Some interesting facts about energy consumption are that “115 million households and five million commercial buildings in the U.S. consume 42% of the nation’s primary energy and 75% of its electricity. Approximately 30% of this energy is used in heating, ventilation and air conditioning.”
