As we approach the one year anniversary of Hurricane Sandy, it’s important to remember and reflect on the damage done. Considering the media buildup that was created before the storm hit, far too many people did not heed the warnings and take the impending impact as serious as they should have. The devastation that resulted left many people shocked - and in a state of regret. Don’t underestimate the power of preparation.

When a storm is in full swing, you don’t want to be thinking about all the things you should have done to protect your family, your house, and your finances. It’s imperative to make sure you are prepared.

The Wall Street Journal has outlined 4 necessary steps in preparing for a natural disaster:

Make a Plan
Create an emergency plan including a meetup place for your family and how you’d stay in touch, keeping out of state relatives in the loop. Put together a disaster kit that all family members can access. This should include non perishable food, water, and other supplies(flashlights, batteries, solar chargers, first aid kit, etc) that will be sufficient for at least 72 hours.

Make Sure You’re Covered
Find out what your homeowners insurance does and doesn’t cover, and whether or not you need to buy supplemental coverage. Most homeowners policies exclude flood coverage - so if you live near water or in a flood zone, consider getting this insurance. Should you live in a rental, property damage is the responsibility of the landlord but you are responsible for replacing your belongings (renters insurance).

Store Your Documents
Most often important documents are stored in a house safe - but last year during Hurricane Sandy for example, if a house was swept away, chances are the safe was gone too. Safety deposit boxes are great alternatives that can hold house deeds, rental leases, insurance policies and the policy numbers, bank documents, birth and marriage certificates, passports, copies of drivers licenses, stock and bond certificates, wills, and valuable jewelry. And with the increasing digital world we are living in - making digital copies of these documents and storing them on Google Drive or DropBox for example is another great alternative. Should anything happen to your house/computer - you can still access the documents from any device.
