This week, the winner and finalists of Gault Energy & Stone's teen essay contest, "What's Next?: Energizing the Next 150 Years?", joined company President Sam Gault for a private tour of New York City's celebrated Bank of America Building, one of the world's most environmentally responsible high-rise office buildings.

Shelby Cataldo's winning essay focused on the science of imitating plant cells and the process of photosynthesis to create energy. The four finalists' essays focused on the use of carbon nanotubes, hydrogen fuel cells, converting human and animal waste to energy, and harnessing ocean waves to create energy.  In addition to the Bank of America tour with her fellow finalists, the winner received a $1,500 scholarship. The contest was part of Gault Energy & Stone's year-long 150th Anniversary celebration.

As our 150th anniversary year gets underway, my family and Gault Energy & Stone employees are putting the finishing touches on our “150 Years of Community” celebration plans. 

On February 7th, we’ll reveal these plans at a special press event at the one place that uniquely tells the story of our company from 1863 to the present, the Gault Barn. While I’m sworn to secrecy about our anniversary plans, I can tell you that my family will celebrate another important milestone in our history on that day.  

A few weeks ago, we were honored to learn that the Gault Barn, located on Compo Road South in Westport, is being added to the Connecticut Register of Historic Places.  Built over the course of several years, beginning in 1890, by company founder and my great-great-grandfather, Robert Gault, the Barn, like our company, has withstood the test of time.  

We look forward to sharing this treasured historic landmark with you as part of our exciting anniversary celebration.

There’s no doubt that family businesses, like Gault Energy & Stone, are the engine of our economy and the foundation of communities across America.  In fact, according to the Small Business Administration, family businesses comprise 90 percent of all business enterprises in North America, and a whopping 62% of total U.S. employment.  But, building and sustaining a family business over five generations, as the Gault family has done, is truly remarkable, especially when you consider that only 12 percent of family businesses in the U.S. are still viable by the third generation.

This year marks a major milestone in the history of Gault Energy and Stone:  the company’s 150^th Anniversary.  The oldest business in the Town of Westport, and the oldest family-owned and –operated fuel company in Fairfield County, Gault Energy & Stone has endured the test of time by constantly evolving to meet the ever-changing needs of the communities it serves.  For 150 years, the company has moved forward, shaping and reshaping its brand, expanding its services, and nurturing its roots across Fairfield County, all the while staying true to its heritage.

In early February, the Gault family will be unveiling details of the company’s year-long  “150 Years of Community” anniversary celebration, designed to honor its founder and highlight the many people, businesses and organizations that are a part of the enduring Gault story. 

On that date, the Gault family will also be announcing another major milestone:  The Gault Barn, formally known as the “Gault Brothers Farmstead”, will be officially added to the Connecticut Register of Historic Places.  Located on Compo Road South in Westport, the Gault Barn uniquely tells the story of the company from 1863 to the present, and embodies the narrative of Gault Energy and Stone through the ages.  Built over the course of several years beginning in 1890 by Gault founder, Robert Gault, the Gault Barn, like the company, has withstood the test of time, and serves as a reminder of the company’s humble beginnings and its hopes for the future.
